CLUB MEMBERS READ EXTRACTS FROM BOOKS

A variety of lovely flowers decorated the lounge at the Hastings Women 's Community Club for the meeting yesterday afternoon. On the stage table and the piano were bowls of Sweet William, and on the centre table in. the lounge was a large bowl of sweet peas, and a float bowl of clematis. Other bowls of scarlet oriental poppies and copper beech foliage were also mnch admired. The programme was arranged by the literaTy circle leader, Mrs W. J. White, and membera were asked to read extracts from books which they had enjoyed. Unfortunately, several members who had promised to read were prevented from attending, but those pregent very much enjoyed hearing es> tracts from i 1 Something of Myself," the last book to be written by Eudyard Kipling, which were read by Mrs H. Lovell-Smith. Later Mrs W. J. White read unu&ual poems written by Ealph Waldo Emerson. Afternoon tea was enjoyed by everyone, and before departing Mrs LovellSmith reminded the members of the visit to the club of Mrs -Eenneth Gordon, on Wednesday., December 1. Slie said that Mrs* Gordon was the act-ing-president of the Auckland Lyceum Club, and had xepresented the Eederated Women 's Clubs at the PanPacific Women 's Conference held in Vancouver in July. During the next two or three weeks it was her inteption to visit every club in the Noxth Island and to tell them the Story of the conference. Mrs Lovell-Smith added that Mrs Gordon had taken an active part in i lmmanitaxian work in Auckland, and had been the leader of the Auckland 1 civic group for a number of years. ^ As slie was a most entertaining and witty speaker, fhe club members hoped that I representatives of all womou's organisations iu Hastings would ^hare in the I pleasure of hearing Mrs Gordon.
