Letters Before Waipukurau Council

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Two aspects of the new stop-bank construction work came before the Waipukurau Borough Council at its meeting last night, the first being a communication from the Eailwaya Land Office advising that the vesting of the area of railway land south of the new stopbank being erected on railway reserve had been approved. The seuoild took the form of a copy of a resolution passed by a meeting of farmers objecting to the difficulty in getting stock over the stop-bank. The Railway Department, in its letter pointed cut that no eliarge would be made for the land, but it would be necessary for the Council to provide a survey plan for proelamation purposes. If the stop bank conuected with the railway stop-bank, it would be necessary for that right to be held under deed at a peppercorn rental, but from the plans available it was doubtful if that position would arise. The land being giveu up to the Council was at present part of a lease to Mr. D. J. Coughlan, and the necessary adjustment to his lease would have to be arranged. It was considered that the council should have control of the stopbank and a motion was carried that the work of- survey would be begun when the bank was completed, providing that the Railways Land Office confirmed the assumption that the council would have control over the stop-bank. Mr. C. R. Watson, secretary of the Waipukurau branch of the Farmers' Union, forwarded a copy of the resolution passed at a meeting held on November 9 with regard to the river stopbank. A copy of a letter and plan lent by the Waipukurau sub-committee of the Stoek Auetioneers' Association to the engineer of the Publlo Works Department at Napier was also received. This submitted that the only safe crossing over the ramp for sheep and cattle was in the corner of the portion now being completed. > The Mayor, Mr. I. W. N. Mackie, said a meeting of representatives of the Central Hawke's Bay Power Board and stock representatives had been held at the ramp, and an agreement satisfactory to btith parties had been reached. The engineer, Mr. H. B. Smart, said that in fairness to • the Public Works Department he would state that the position of the ramp was not the fault of the department 's ^engineer. The ramp was now being erected where it was wanted. "There are four residences in the borough not cpnnected to the sewerage system," pointed out Mr. Smart in his report, "and in the interests of public health I would suggest that the owners be notified to have the necessary work carried out immediately. " Mr. J". L. Brathwaite moved that the owners be requested to have connections made within 30 days. This was seconded by Mr. H. A. Martin and carried.
