ST. MATTHEW'S GUILD HOLDS SUCCESSFUL SALE AND GARDEN PARTY
The beautiful garden which. surrounds Mrs J. C. Tosswill's home in Fitzroy Avenue, Hastings, was viewed with much pleasure yesterday afternoon by a large number of visitors who were present at the garden party and annual sale of work of the members of St. Ma'tthew's Guild of Fellowship. The guests were welcomed by the vicar, Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, who was present with Mrs Mortimer-Jones. Mrs Barton' Hobbs, the Guild president, and the secretary, Mrs H. de Denne, were present', and also the hostess, Mrs J. C. Tosswill, Deaconess Holmes and the Rev. Kenneth Leggett. The numerous stalls were set about the garden, and being laden with attractive goods did brisk business - throughout* the afternoon. . ' After making their purchases the ; visitors thoroughly enjoyed wandering ^ into every nook and crannie of Mrs ; TosswilFs wonderful garden. The love- ■ ly rose garden, with many different ! varieties all in full bloom, was "admired ; by everyone, and huge beds of irises ' in every possible . coloUr called f orth ! mu^h praise. In another part of the garden were beautiful delphiniums in every shade of bliie, while the path was edged on either- side with' Sweet William, in many lovely shades. Uncommon coloured aquilegias also attracted much . attention, and many beautiful ; shrubs were to be seen on either side of the entrance drive. In front of the house was a large lawn with several lovely old trees, and at the far side were - hododendrons in several beautiful shades; in front of tftiese a wide stfeam with irises on either side and waterlilies in bloom on one of ihe ponds. In the centre of the pond was • a Japanese pagoda eovered with wistaria. After strollihg through the garden the visitors enjoyed a refreshing cup of tea served in the shade outside. Those in charge of the afternoon tea were Mesdames J. W. Fendajl, Sharkey, Houston, Brand and des Forges. The following were the stalls, with those in charge: — Produce, Mrs Stubbs, Mrs Satehell, Mrs F. J. Hull, Mrs P. Burr; white elephant stall, Mrs; C. Mor-timer-Jones, Mrs JDoole, Miss Kathleen Stubbs; work stall, Mrs W. Bryant, Mrs Howell, Mrs H. de Denne; cake stall, Mrs Cato, Mrs Bees Davies, Mrs Bayly. Miss Powdrell; flower stall, Mrs Johnstone, Mrs Sparks; competitions, Mrs H. C. Davies,. Miss Lyndal Candy; lce creams, Mrs Marden ' and Miss D. Wakelin. The competition winners were: — tapestry stool, Miss Riley; blue kitchen set, Mrs Pqrter; green kitchen set, Mrs Albiston; large cake, Mrs Bayliss; small cake, Miss Rainbow. . Those who had spared no effiort to make the sale and garden party a success felt well rewarded with the results, especially as there were over 250 visitors present.
