MR. W. G. MARTIN

Another of Napier 's prominent citizens, Mr William George Martin, of Sliakespeare Terrace, passed away this ■ morning foilowing a short but painful illness. The late Mr Martin came to Hawke's Bay as a young man and was for a number of years in the serviee of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, as a teaeker. On various occasions he was headniaster of the Hastings Street, Havelock North, and other schools. Mr Martin' tdqk a proininent part in the f onnation of ' the New' Zealand Teachers 'Tnstitute, and was for a tinie president of the Hawke's Bay branch. He was also " prominent in cbnnection with the Loyal Napier "Lodge of Oddfellpws,'and also the Hawke's Bay District of 'that 'Order, being treasurer 'for a time. He had passed through all ranks in the order, and was a Past Rroyincial Grand Master. Mr Martin : took a- deep interest in public . afi'airs, . and on his retiremenf from teaching held a seat for . some years .on tlie -Napier Borough Council. He was als.o on the board of directors of the . Napier Permanent Building and Investment Society. He. leaves a .widow to whom the deep sympathy of a wide, circle of friends will be extended. , The int.erment. will .take place at the E.ark Island . cemetery to-inorrow, after a serviee at St. John's„.at 2.30 p.m. |
