SHARP TREMOR
Seismic Disturbance This Afternoon CLOCK BELLS RING Hastings and Napier were shaken by a sharp earthquake shortly after 2.18 o'clock this afternoon, but so far as could be ascertained, no damage was done.' In Hastings the shock was the greatest felt for some time, but little alarm was apparent in any of the people m the town. The shock at first was extremely sharp, but was followed by a longer period of gentle swaying that was sufficient to set the bells of the clock tower clanging. In the town, a nnmber of people entered *the streets, but were quite orderly. At picture theatres there was little alarm, one manager reportmg that people continued to enter the building during the tremor, and that, although a small numher came out into the lohby, they returned immediately. Immediately following the tremor there was a sudden rush of telephone calls at the Hastings telephone exchange, but otljerwise the telegraph business was not affected.
