The shock at first was extremely sharp, but was followed by a longer period of gentle swaying that was sufficient to set the bells of the clock tower clanging. At picture theatres there was little alarm, one manager reportmg that people continued to enter the building during the tremor, and that, although a small numher came out into the lohby, they returned immediately. Immediately following the tremor there was a sudden rush of telephone calls at the Hastings telephone exchange, but otljerwise the telegraph business was not affected.
