Typewriter Collecting as Hobby
TOBONTO — On: tbe searcb for old typewriters, the collection of whicii is bis particular bobby, Alderman Carl P. Dietz of Milwaukee recently visited this city. Mr Dietz bas colleeted and presented to tbe Milwaukee museum 350 typewriters, all related to one of the' world 's brst typewrfters wbicb was produced in 1868 by C. L. Sholes, editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel, and Carlos Glidden. Since be started bis searcb for some of tbese early macbines, be has discovered tbat tbe Sboles and Glidden original gave riso to 300 manufacturors, producing machines under 742 names. Tbe earliest ''writing macbines" were decorated with roses and lilies of
tbe valley and advertised as "ornaments to auy parlour, " but even tbis apparently did not enhanco tbeir popularity, as it was not for several more years tbat people began us'ing them in large numbers^Mr Dietz said.
