FUNDS FOR WAIPUKURAU RED CROSS

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. St. Andrew's Hall, Waipukurau, was crowded this evening for the variety concert staged by St. Andrew's Bible class girls in aid of the local branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Socie-' ty. The performance was of a very high standard, the audience showing their appreciation by loud and prolonged applause for each item. Great credit is due to the producer, Miss F. Malkin, who, on receiving her second year's certifieate was presented with a choice bouquet by the president, Mrs E. J. Turner, as a mark of appreciation from the Red Cross Society. Useful Knowledge Gained. i During the intervai, the Mayor, Mr I. W. N. Maekie, Mrs E. J. Turner and Matron Inglis, took their places on the stage for the presentation of medallions and certificates gained during the year. Before making the presentatlons the Mayor gave a short resume of Red Cross work since the time of Florence Nightingale. He mentioned that by attending the classes both old and young gained much useful knowledge. He said the local branch was indebted to the doctors and nurses for the help they had given, and for donations received from others interested in the work. The Mayor touched briefly on the ap-' peal that was being made for the Far East, and hoped that all would help in some small way. He then presented the seeretary 's Mrs H. Butler's report, which discloscd that since the branch 's inception six years ago, it had made steady progress. Last session there was a roll call of 40, home nursing being the favourite class. The preseut first-aid membership was about 22. Medalltons and Certiflcates. The following medallions and certificates were then presented by Matron Inglis: — Additional bar to medallion, Mrs W. Turner and Mrs E. Malkin; first bar to medallion, Miss J. Neilsen; medallion, Miss D. Thompson and Miss M. Moriarty; second-year certificates, Miss E. Paget, Miss F. Malkin, Miss J. Bennett; first-year certificates, Mrs O'Connell, Mrs Howlett, Mrs Perkins, Miss L. Thomson, Miss L. Rayner.
