Annual Gathering at Waipukurau

WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. A gathering of over 80 ex-servicemen at the annual reunion of the Waipukurau Returned Soldiers' Association last evening showed that even after 19 years the spirit of eomradeship that permeated the trenches remains. The gathering was held in the Masonie Hall, Waipukurau, aud was attended by exservicemen from all over the district. The Waipukurau Orchestral Society 's' orchestra played marches and choruses. Other items on the programme were: Songs, Mr E. T. Haldane and Mr E. G*. Collin; elocutionary itcms, Mr F. V. Ward. Choruses were led by Mr R. Moore, Dannevirke. Tho membcrs of the orchestra were: Messrs K. McKenzic (piano), J. C. Windle, L. P. Donnolly, and J. Oliver (violius), A. S. Ormond (cornet), A. P. Green and J. G. Carpenter (clarinets), F. Heasman (flute) and H. S. Cottrell ('cello). Mr E. Malkin was conductor. While the company stood to hononr the toast, "Absent Comrades," Mr Haldane sang the "Requiem." Mr A. O. Williams, president of tli6 Waipukurau Returned Soldiers' Association, presided. Other seats at the official table were occupied by the Mayor af Waipukurau, Mr I. W. N. Maekie, Mr H. M. Christie, M.P., Major Clifton, Porangahau, and Mr H. Limbrick, president of tlie Waipawa Returned Soldiers' Association. The following toasts were honoured: The Association (Mr V. Parsons — Mr Limbrick) ; Absent Comrades (Mr J. L. Brathwaite) ; Visitors (Major Clifton — Captain C. M. Williamson) ; Parliament (Mr Maekie — Mr Christie) ; The Performers and Others (Mr F. Byrnc — Messrs Haldane and M: kin).
