SEWER EXTENSION

Proposed Additions To Hastings Facilities USE OF LOAN MONEY Application is to be made by the Hastings Borough Council to the Loans Board for permission to expend the estimated unexpended portion of the £34,000 sewer loan on the extension of the sewer to parts of the borough not served at present. This decision v/as arrived at last, evening when the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, reported to the council that he had interviewed the secretary of the Loans Board in Wellington, with reference to securing permission to expend the unexpended balance of the £34,000 sewer loan, which will be lcft aftcr the sewerage outfajl. contract had been completed. The work proposed to be carried out "was the extension of the sewer to certain portions of the borough whieh were at present unsewered, and also for the construction of underground conveniences. The Mayor stated that he explained the necessity of securing the authority now, before the actual loan work was completed, so as to enable the council to make preparations for the work to be carried out by the present eontrac'tor. The borough engineer considered that this method would be much cheaper than'by day labour, even with subsidy. The Mayor stated last night that it was estimated that there would be a surplus of £3000 from the loan and the proposal was to extend the sewerage system, where gravitation would ailow, in tho vicinity of Frederick street, Pakowhai road, Maraekakaho road, Park road and Lumsden road. The provision of this facility would result in additional rating Tevenue and provide greater b^nefit to the community m various ways. Thig was particularly tho caso as regards Frederick street, he said, where vdnsideruble subdivisional work would be encouraged with the making of the water and sewer services available. It was intcnded also to build an up-to-date men's convenience in the town itself to replace those behind the clock tower.
