HOUSING SURVEY
Satisfactory Position In Hastings LITTLE 0VERCR0WDING "It is pleasing to pote th© eutisfactory state in which tlie dwellings are kept by tlie tenantg.and Jandlords, and the cordial way in wlijcli X have been received whilst making rny inspections," stated Mr, Q. Carrell, Borough Building Inspector, at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening when t.abling his report on the housing survey rnade by hiii} during receiit months. A satisfactory position, generally, as regards the condition' of" houses in Hastings is revealed, In his report Mr, Carrell stated that he inspected 2^8 houses in all parts ul the borough and of this nurnher 94 are satisfactory, 130 repairable and four unrepairable, Only three houses were oyercrowded. The owners of dwelliiigs requiring repairs have received notice to effect them, sorae of which have been carried oulf. "The unrepairable dwellings, aJthough not in an unsanitary condition, are iir such a state tliat repairs are practicalJy impossible," he said. "Of these, one is occupied by the owner, one by relations of owners paying no rent, and two are used as batches, one not being connected to sewer. The overcrowded dwellings are qne occupied by the owner, one -family unablo to obtain a larger house owing to financial difficulties, and one was only tempo rarily overcrowded. "It is noticeable that, of t|ie 228 house's inspected there are only 57 having hot and cold water services, and tbat, witlx the outside painting and sliglit repairs, woulH in most cases bring the remainder up to a satisfactory standard/'he concluded. "This is a splendid report and reveals Hastings to be a particularly wellbuilt and designed borough," said the Mayor, Mr, G. A. Maddison. He was especially pleased to note that his statement to the Under-Secretary of Housing, Mr. J. A. Lee, on the occasion of the latter's visit to this district a year or so ago, to the effect that there was no overcrowding in Hastings, liad been fully justified and confirmed, for the report revealed that there were only three houses that were overcrowded. "If the Governmeut build several hiindred houses ln Hastings," he concluded, "then there will bc 'niany vacant places."
