Settlers Prcss Glaims on Patangata County Council
(From
WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. Roads giving access to coastal properties forme.d the subject of a lengthy discuasion to-day at the meeting of the Patangata County Council, when two requests by settlers for roads were referred to the engineer, Mr J. C. McLauchlanu for reports. Mr R. J. Guerin, a ratepayer in th» Weber county, forwarded a letter he had reeeived from the Public Works Dopartrpent, and Mr D. G. Spccdy, of Pipibank Station, Herbertville, attended lihe meeting to oirge his own claims. Mr Speedy said he had great di(S.culty in getting wool away, relying for access on the bcaeh. and paddocks, which were both impassable in wet weather. . "Sympathy is very cheapI,', replied the chairman, Mr C. Pattison, "but it costs money to make a road. It would be impossible for us to do anything this year." . Mr A. W. S. Longley; I think it is a case where we could justly ask for a grant from the Public Works DepartmCnt. The new formation would be approximately two-thirds of a mile. Mr Pattison: The probability is that we cannat do much. Our job is mainly •maintenance, not formation. Mr Speedy; Who is going to form it? Mr Pattison: We might ask you to help. Mr Speedy: Don't you think we have done enougb. in 70 ' years by paying iates? Mr Pattison: Rates won't make . roads. We will go into the matter and we are quite prepared to help as far as our funds will allow us. It was decided to await the engineer 's report.
