' ^ , - ADELAIDE, Nov. 8. I ' The New Zealanders wero beaten by teu wickets by South Australia in the first Australian match, but they leave Adelaide knowing they were^ responsible for the brightest features of the game. It would have been a drab contest but for the tourists' superb fielding and the sparkling hitting in their second innings to-day. Vivian was the star and with crisp, yigorous shots scored 38 in the first over from the fast bowler Cotton. His 50 occupied 46 minutea and his total of 64> including ten fours, was completed in 61 minutes. He treated the fast and slow bowlers alike in cavalier fashion. He went out to an excellent catch by .Scaife at silly mid-on. Wallace's ,37 was made by the same brilliant stro.kemaking as in the first innings. Donnelly batted better to-day for 24, graceful leg shots featuring in his knock, which included four fours. ^ The innings closcd-for 186, leaving South Australia seven .to get. for an outright win. These Walker and Badcock collected in four overs. ' The Test bowler Ward, whom - the jmanager, Mr T.' Lowry, rated as better jthan any slow .bowler ' ehcountered ' on ithe. English tour, was a thorn in'the side iof the ' New "Zealanders, taking seven ' iwckets for 62 runs. Ward was seen in another ' role. in.
