CHRISTCHURCH, Lasfc Night. The Minister of Hines (the Hon. P. 0. Webb) announced t'o-day that an agreement satisfactory to all parties was reached at a conference presided over by himself held in Christchurch on Saturday between representatives of the Coal Mine Owners' Federation and the Mine Workers' Federation. The principal question discussed was the putting .off of inen at the Linton Coliicries, Southland, during the summei months. Owing to the increased demand foi coal last winter, said the Minister, he made a general appeal to all coal owners to employ as many unemployec miners as the trade warranted, and hc placed the onus on the industry of supplying New Zealand's requirements. "3 appealed to the companies to meet thal demand by the employment of more men on the understanding that the lasl to be taken on should be the first tc be put off if circumstances warranted that step being taken," said the Minister. ''The conference on Saturday set up a sub-c.ommittee, representative oi both parties, which bropght . about a satisfactory agreement on this point."
