GUILD MEMBERS VISIT MRS. C. J. BAKER'S GARDEN

A pleasant and interesting afternc-an was enjoyed by members of the garden circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild yesterday when they visited Mr. and Mrs. G. J. Baker's garden at Haumoana. The visitors were received by Mrs. Baker and were made most welcome, and ghe then showed them over the garden. At the gateway, members very much admired a huge oak tree with wistaria in blossom climbing through the branches to the top of the tree. A climbing rose, also blooming, was intermingl'ed with th§ lower"rbranches of the* tree and covered an archway beside it. j' Through the archway was to be seen a bed of beautiful aquilegias, the many different shades, several of which were most uncommon, being eommented on by several of the keen gardeners who were among the visitors, Eurther on was an attractive sunken garden with a sundial in the centre and rock gardens all around in which were to be seen a great variety of tiny plants, all of which were admired. A wliole bed of irises in many diftterent colours was the centre of praise from the visitors and alongside a large bed of roses eoining iuto bloom gave evidence of care and promised to have, many prize hlooms. The water liiy pond was unfortunately not at its best as the fiowers were not yet in bloom, but beyond tlus, over a smali bridge, was a comer of young native trees and shrubs which interested the visitors who were anxious to discover what particular trees were growing there. After wandering round and thoroughly examining tlie gardens, those present enjoyed afternoon tea outsida belore they returned home. Miss J. Shaw, the circle seeretary, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs. Baker very sincerely for giving everyone such a very bappy afternoon. Pickering was present and also the gujld president and seeretary, Mrs. A. F. Glenny and Mrs. J\ Deans, and a good number of members.
