Engineer's Report on Work Done on the Roads

WAIPAWA, Last Night. The following is the report submitted by .the engineer, Mr Y. F. Douglas, to the monthly meeting of the Waipawa County Council: — Waipawa Riding: Patching was carried out'on the Kereru road, the Washout 011 the Argyll-Otane road hy Rathbone's, which subsided further, was repaired, and posts and rails were installed by Moore's, on College road. Ongaonga Riding: Hickey's road, Wakarara, was metalled in the wheel tracks with 100 yards of metal and a further 15 yards was used in patching the Wakarara road between the school and the Mill. Fences were repaired near the papa cutting bridge and Pletc/hex's crossing bridge. Taylor's road was patched and the slab on Plantation road was cleared. Clinton Riding: Metal was spread on Black's road, and approximately another 150 yards remains to be spread to make up the full 700 yards authorised. Crushed metal was spread on the South Makaretu road. No furtiher work is being done on this road at present, though the section of this road between the juriction with the baclc Makaretu and the Dannevirke County boundary is very weak and requires metalling at an early date. As decided by the council at last meeting, the metalling of Goolt's road is not being proeeeded with till the outcome of the council's application for a Public Works Department grant is lcnown. The horse grade woTked in tlhis riding during the month, during which Black's road, back Makaretu road and Wilsoa's cutting road were completed. South Makaretu road is now being dealt with. Takapau Riding: Metal was spread' by contract on. the Whenuahou, Otawhao and Otawhao School roads, and boulders were carted to the river protection work on the Ashcott-Waipuku-rau road. This protective work has now heen completed. A deflection groyne has been constructed. up'stream, and three short groynes project from the protective' wall. A fresh in the river towards the end of last month showed that the protective works were aeting satisfaetorily, and 'I hope that the river will he thrown away from the road, General. Proposals covering the sealing of oue mile each of the Waipaya-Pourerere, Waipawa-Ongaonga (Waipawa end), Waipawa-Ongaonga (Ruataniwha) and Fernhill-Takapua main " highways have been prepared and forwafded to the Main Highways Board for approyal. • * The . cleaning of the Argyll water race will have to be carried out by day labour. With reference to the Forest Gate water race, it has not- been pos•sible for the sub-commiftce to meef me to prepate a scheme of re-organisation. It may be possible to do this during tlie coming month. Main Highways. Fernhill-Takapau Main Highway: Work is proceeding with "the^ re-con-struction of one mile through Tikokino. AU cut and fill has been. completed, and a total of 598 yards of pit metal -and 164 yards of extra filling were delivered and spread. Waipawa-Pourerere Main Highway: A total of 60 cubie yards of sealing chips has been delivered for the sealing of one mile at the Waipawa end. The rate of delivery is unsatisfactory, General maintenance and grading was carried out on the Waipawa-Tikokino, and Waipawa-Ongaonga main highway. Waipukurau-Matamua Main Highway: The metalling by contract between the Otawhao main road corner and the Manawatu bridge was complet? ed, a total of 447 cubie yards being . spread during the month. The whole of this . highway, except for the sealed portion and the stretch between Takapau and the Otawhao main road inter- . section,- has been remetalled this year.
