PLANS FOR NEW STATION
Nothing to be Done in Immediate Future THE MAYOR'S INQUIRIES There is no immediate prospect of a new station being erected in Hastings, according to tbe information given tbe Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, during his visit to Wellington last week. Engineers have prepared tentative plans, for a new station to be situated a little nortb of tbe present site, but there is no lilcelihood of anything .being done in the immediate future. Mr Maddison, who visited Wellington on various matters relating to the borough and also'to the Hawke's Bay Education Board, of which he is chairman, said that he interviewed Mr G. H. Mackley, general manager of tbe New Zealand Railways, regarding a number of matters affeeting tbe railway in this district. He said he was informed tbat the engineers bad prepared tentative plans fo'r a new station, b'ut Tahere tbat was to be erected he was. not in a .position to state, though he understood it was to be nortb of tbe present site. An engineer from the department • would be visiting Hastings shortly to confer with the borough eouncil, be said, regarding the proposed openirig-up of Russell street in "tbe direetion of Alexander creseent. * Some of the proerty involved in"tbis' proposal belongs fto tho borough, and other -paris to tbe department. Cassidy, , this morning intimated that his ' department bad given authority for tbe moving of tbe "home" signal-boXes * at the Hastings railway yards, thus allowing for greater facilities for shunting operations. The removal of the signals .to points -further apart wiiPalTow for more shunting to be done north of-' St. Aubyn street than was possible in tbe past. : ' '
