CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night. "We can't play about lightJy with. taritt's," said the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, Minister of Labour, in com•nenting to-day on the difficulties of the tootwear trade. "Lt's all very well for people to talk of higher tariffs, but we've got to consider our agreements * with other parts of tbe Empire. If w© break those agreements, where do we etand with themF" The Miiiister said that, since his recent visit to Christchurch and his in.spection of footwear factories, a deputation from the manufacturers had met the Hon. Walter Nash. Minister of Finance. He could say now that the Government would definitely do something for the industry, but it could be done tothout the necessity of resorting t0 tariff increases.
