WANGANUI, This Day. Leslie James Wedderspoon^ aged 21, bootmaker and Robert George Burns, aged 19, labour er, of Auckland, were charged in the Magistrate 's • Court in connection with an assault on TraflicInspector M. Hartigan at Karioi, on November 2. Burns pleaded guilty to assault and not guilty to the tlieit of the inspector's motor keys. The inspector said that he first received a glancing blow with a torch and was tippe.d to the ground, where he was struck another blow over the hcad. He lost consciousness and later heard someone say, "Quick, he is eqming to." He had- been dragged to the sido of the road. Wedderspoon stated that he himself was struck several times on the head and about the upper part of the bqdy. When all three were struggling, they lost their balance and fell" against the door of the motor-car and the inspector lay limp on the ground. The Magistrate, Mr J. H. Salmon, said that the two accused tried to cover, up their crime by committing a grave' assault on an inspector. Both "were Sentenced to two' months on the assault charge, for 'the theft' of the keys Wedderspoon received one month, and both were sentenced to one month for the theft of petrol from drums left on the roadside. The car concerned was removed from Hastings on October 19
