(Keceived 4, 8.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 3. The Minister of Defence, Sir Archdale Parkhill, to-day lost the Warringah seat t,o his unofficial United Australia Party opponent, Mr P. C. Spendcr, K.C., by 2308 votes. As an example of how- the preferenoes of the other two candidates went, 'Mr Spender obtained no fewer than 9020 of the Labour candidate's 9711 preferences and in the allocation of t.he prot'erences of both the Labour and TndCpendent candidates Mr Spender received 14,124 compared with Sir Arclidale's 2570. The outcome of tliis contest was awaited with the keenest interest throughout Australia. The Gwydir seat has been rctained by the Labour candidale, Mr W. Scully, from the Country Pqrty candidate, Mr E. Bachelor, by '2461 votes. Mr Corser retained the Wide Bay seat in Queensland . by 536 votes over the Social Credit nominee, Mr G. Nicholas. The counting of votes for the House of Representatives is ractieally complete in all States. The only seat gained by Labour from the Government is Ballarat. The state of t2ie parties in the new Parliament will be: — United Australia 28 . Independent United Australia 1 United Country 15 Victoria Countty Party 1 Labour 29 The Victorian Country Party member is Mr A. Wilson, who defeated Ihe sitting United Country Party member, Mr H. McCleilapd. - The first senator to be declared elected is Mr \f. Aylett, one of the Labour team in Tasmania.
