elsthorpe children spend gay evening

ELSTHORPE, Last Night. One of the most popular and eagerlyawaited funetions of the year in Elsthorpe, especially to the children, is the annual school ball, which. was held in the. Elsthorpe Hall. The function proved to be one of the most successful ever held, and finaneially, a record of £28 was taken. Tiie fancy costumes of the children were a eredit to their parents, who spared no effort in providing most original and attractive costumes. The hall, which was decorated with coloured streamers and balloons, while posters and greenery and kowhai blossom adorned the walls, was transformed into a veritable fairyland. After the Grand Mareh, the children gave a creditable display of f olk dances, interspersed with ballroom and novelty dances. Musie was supplied by Les. Henry 'a orchestra, and Mrs A. Thompson played the music for the folk ' dances. Mr A. H. Thompson was M.C. for the children 's dances, and Mr P. Hayden controlled the floor for the adult dances. The judges of the fancy costumes, Mrs Lincoln and Mrs Anderson, 'had a very difficult task, but their decisious gave every satisf action. The winners were: Senior girls, Doreen Cheer; senior boys, Bobby Eagle; junior girls, Shirley ■ Eagle; junior boys, . Selwyn Watson; most original (girls), Patty Nelson; most original (boys), Billv Gilmour; special prize, donated by the orchestra to two tiny tots, Belle McAulay and Margaret Haycock, "Two Little Girls in Blue." The winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky spot, Doreen Eagle and Bobby Eagle; lucky partners, Kathleen McGaffin and Ken McAulay; musical parcel, Joau Lissette and Selwyn Watson. A dainty supper was served by the ladies. The tables, decorated with iceland poppies and pansies, looked very inviting arrayed with many good things to eat. At the conclusion of the children 's dances Mr A. McGaffin, chairman of the school committee, congratulated the children and their parents, and Mr Thompson, the teacher, on the success of the ball, and thanked all foT their support. Eileen Eagle (senior girl) then presented Mrs Thompson with a posy. A beautifully-iced fruit cake (pres.ented by Mrs ' Sturroek, Hastings) was won by Mr G. Gleeson,. and Mr J. Kenderdine won the box of tea. List of Fancy Dresses.
