Gelding Breaks Legs and Back at Hastings GEIRA'S GOOD GALLOP
(By '
The Hastings tracks this morning, contrary to expectations, were not as fast us many thought as the following times iu the semi-final gallops for the annual xaee meeting of the Waipawa Club to be held on Saturday on the Hastings raceco-urse will prove. Where not specified the gallops took place on the plough. • * « If the times were not seusational, a happening that was the breaking of two legs and the back of a gelding by Gainscourt from the Quin Abbey mare Quinsy, the property of Mr J. M. Paul, of Hastings. He was going only three-quarter pace on the course proper when one leg enappecl and then the other, causing him to go down so suddenly behind that his back was broken. His rider, R. Colello, was fortunate in escaping with a slight shaking oiily. • » ♦ Before breakfast the first to be stripped for actiou were Trailer (J. Olsen) and Fundy Bay (J. Dooley), when they ran six furlongs in 1.204. After a very heavy dew the atmosphere was much denser than later on in tho morniug with the result that the very early gallops were not as fast as later. • » • Le Toquet (J. Dooley), although finishing alongside Tullamore (R. Marsh) over six furlongs in 2.20$, apappeared to have the upper hand. However, Tullamore is very unconcerueu on the track. Thus her private work is not as good-as she produces on the day. « * « Easily the best short gallop of the morning was given by the three-year-old filly, Geira (J. Dooley), who against the bit dashed over the half-mile in. 50secs. The manner in which it was done makes it an attraetive gallop. ♦ Tupai (J. Dooley) could have bettered the 52$secs. put up by him. He will not race at Hastings, being a ro.de in piekle for next Saturday at Greenmeadows. - ♦ ; • - • No persuasion could make Pakanui do his bit. First the apprentice, L Briggs, was sent out on the Hunting Song horse to gallop him, but he stopped between the six and seven-furlong posts and refused to budge despite the use of a whip. Trainer M. Stowe then took the seat, but the half-mile in 57secs. showed clearly that he was not galloping. The last day at Trentham he was left to take no part in the race, so that he might be getting a bi.t tired of the game, which will cause his followers to limit the extent of their monetary support in the future. » » « Jacynth (J. Molloy) and Thala (J. Forsyth) were hard held when xunning half a mile in 55secs. • • • Laughing Song (J. Forsyth) had for a companion Triplex (E. Marsh) over three furlongs in 39secls. The two-year-old finished ahead, but Triplex was not sent out to best this baby. « * • Daryill (B. Marsh) was of not much use to Buster Brown (L. Cullen) over half a mile iu the fair time of 51$secs. Buster Brown is none the worse off for his hurried trip to Bulls last Saturday. * ♦ • Black Frost (J. Dooley), stringing along- with a little in reserve, ran three furlongs in 39secs. He appears to be all right again and may be marked off as a likely winner after a few races. # « # rPladie (C. Shields) was not. out to show the track watchers his best when finishing three lengths behind Tres Sec (J. Forsyth) over a round in 1.43$. . & «« e Sweepalong (N. Gilmer) took 53secs. for her half-mile, but being alone, di.d not go as well as if in company. e # » Iddo (B. Stowe), after being trotted round the sand to work the soreness off, went very well over six furlongs when registering 1.18$ for that distance. Flame Queen picked him up over the last four furlongs to run 52$secs. for the half, but she was against the bit tho last two furlongs home to finish abreast with Iddo after getting left at the pick up. - - # # • Larwood (L. Cullen) surprised by the clean way in which he accounted for Marsyas (C. Shields) in the very fair time of 1.17J for the three-quarters of a mile. The latter had the worst of the weights by at least two stone. s # « • Parry (H. Callinan) and Top Hat (McGuire) were given a mile and ahalf pace work and then came home the last half iu 53secs., but were undar restraint. • • • Sir Nigel (J. Dooley) and Haile Selassie (Gought) were together all the way over five furlongs. in 65secs. The latter, a three-quarter brother to his galloping companion, is defiuitely on the improvo, & # >& Maine (C. Cameron) was not very impressive when taking 1.45$ for once round the plough. . iif » o On the course proper Star Lad and Quimper were paired off over five furlongs, but .the time, 68secs., revealed that' it was only a working gallop. • # # Limbohm (T. Treacy) was going better all the way than Great Sandy over six furlongs in the mediocre timo of 1.21. ' • * • The order at the ond of five furlongs run in 64secs. was Bunfight (J. Dooley), Fossicker (R. Marsh), Gasman (J. Walsh) and Pukehou (R. Gregory), the margins at the finish being half lengtli3. This was also on the course proper. • # « Diana Tetrix (H. Young) was going easily to run three furlongs on the course proper in 40$secs. The half-sister, by Tidal, -to Sardius came home with the chestnut the last two furlongs. # © $ Mahutai (I. Briggs) and Joe Louls (H. Young) wero flat :oiit to run tho
last six of seven furlongs in 1.18J. In 65secs. Seyfried brought the pair homewhen all three wero in liue, • « • KiriTiki (E. Deslandes) rau half $ mile in 52$sec«v # « * Moho (H. Callinan) rau a mile on the course proper iu 1.47, but was uot oue to make time. Power Chief (J. Forsyth) brought Soho home tlie last -six furlongs in 1.21. • * • The only jumping of the morning wai that done by Cletrac (E. Deslandei), who ran once round over the schooling fences to register 1.46. He jumpedjvell over five, but at a couple was not ■ so goo.d. - ' -
