Traffio Bridge at Waipawa The surveying of the site for the proposed new traffic hridge at Waipawa has been completetT by the officers of the Public Works Departraent at Napier, and the plan has been forwarded on to Wellington, When constructed a new bridge will eliminate the wide detour — extending over abqut a mile and a-half — which occurs on the main south highway. A deputation approached the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, several montha ago, urging the necessity for a new bridge with the result that the Minister gave instructions for the immediate preparation of a sitc plan. Citj and borough councils throughout New Zealand are at present concerned with the problem of reducing the expense of continual repainting required for pedestrian crossings in the main thoroughfares. With this object in view,- the Dannevirke borough engineer, Mr. S. Annabell, is experimenting with a new idea. The crossing at tlie south end of High street is being painted with hot bitumen to bind a layer of shells,- It is hoped that this process will not only be immensely more lasting, but will provide a more clearjy discrenible indication of the crossing. Little Rain At Dannevirke. ^ Little rain fell' in Dannevirke during October, except in the fourth week, when there were . five wet days. The total fall for the month of 2.14 inohes was registered on nine days. This is considerably less than the average for the month which, over the last 3Q years, works out at 4.21 inohes. The highest October rainfall recorded was 8.26 inches jn 1912 and the lowest, 1.08 inches. The "total fall so far this year is 30.29 inches, compared with 42,24 inches for ihe same perjod last year. Last year the total for the 12 months was 49.60 inches, compared with an average of 42.9 inches.
