(By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, Last Night. A request for ext'ra iinancial assistance from the Government was made by a deputation representing the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, the New Zealand branch of the Eoyal Life-Saving Society, and the New Zealand Surf Live-Saving Association which waited on- the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, to-day. The Minister expressed warm appreciation of the work being carried on by the three bodies. He emphasised that the saving of human lives could not be measured in pounds, shillings and pence, 'and undertook to recommend Oabinet to grant the extra Iinancial assistance sought by the deputation. Mr. Fred G. Dunn, president of the Amateur Swimming Association, said it was estimated that to teach every child ' in New Zealand to ■ swim would cost, about £760 pe'r ailnum. If the r-ioney were made available the Amateur Swimming Association was prepared ' to teach up to 30,000 children during the coming seasoii. - The main trouble of the Eoyal LifeSaving Society was organisation, and a grant of £500 over five years was asked for,- at the end of which period, the Society thought, it could be selfsupporting. The Surf Life-Saving Association asked for £300 for the current year, mainly for equipment, extensions and renewals. The total of £1160 seeme£ a large sum, but 'there 'were 'records of 216 lives having been saved on the beaches in New Zealand during the past year. It had been suggested ■ that in certain aspects of the work . the Government might be prepared to give a £ for £ subsidy, which would act as an incentivo to the organisations.
In xeplying, Mr. Parry said that the work should be put on a basis similar to that of fire brigades, and that it should be financed by loeal bodies, insurance companies ard the Government. He would certainly bring the matter before Oabinet.
