Engineer Reports Progress of Control Schemes iWORK DURING MONTH ©W monthly meeting of the Hawke's Bay Rivers Board was held in Napier to'fday, Present Messrs. C. Lassen (ohainnan), R. B. Talbot, W. G. Jaryis, G. Fairey and J. H. Sheatli. Leave of absence was granted to Mr. .W. H* Campbell. Reporting on the progress on the Ngaruroro river control scheme for the four weeks ended October 12. the engineer, Mr. G» Rochfort reported that 45,940 yards of material were handled in the various earthworks, making a total to date of 25,260 yards. The average cost per yard was as follow : — 21.6d by cartage, 19.3d by scoop, 9.4d by excavator. Good progress had been made in extending the drain on the southern side of. the overflcw and also in deepening the Pakowhai drain. i- Eeavy clearing had been done on both sides of the xiver and at Waitangi During the period £6965 was expended on the work, making a total to date of £50,492 for the' scheme. A further £266 was spent on the final stages of. the Tutaekuri 'control scheme, making £96,823 on the scheme, to date. An additional concrete block had been built into the groyne and a gtart had been made with a second. Fair progress had been made in opening the channel under the bridges but the tide did not so far ron out as it shonldi - Eairs to the Waitangi floodgate had been effected and the drain cleared 'near the gates*. A considerable amount of general maintaenance work was carried out in which good progress was made with the improvement to the Awanui streapi. The engineer Teported on the work as nnder: — • *. Awanui * Stream:. Work . on this stream between ( McFee 's bridge and the' old Ngaruroro is neaqly completed. £369 12/11. Tutaekuri River j Protective " work between Brookfield^ and Powdrell's is completed and fenced. £48 18/2. , Clearing and fencing at' the Reserve Powdrell's Bend is completed. £20 J7/4, Ploughing was started again at Brookfields and good progress has been paade. , £26,13/10. Pilot channel is completed for 27 chains— Slow progress was made and the services of about half the men dispensed with, Better progress has been made since. £286 3/9.
Tukituki River: .Protection work at MeRobbie's, Te Mata, is finished and general maintenance work is being done lower down. £109 18/-. Ngarara or River: Clearing and burnSng at Roy 's Hill has been done. The flame-throwers have been. put on the ground but since then the weather has been unsuitable "for successful burning. A start has been made aplitting posts tor fencing the reserve. ' £36 2/-.
