N.Z. COMPOSITIONS AT B.M.S. CONCERT AT WAIPUKURAU

At the monthly eoncert of the Cenfcral Hawke's Bay branch of the British Musie Society, Mrs Audrey Gibson Foster and Miss' Elgar Christie, of Wellington, were the guests. The first part of the programme consisted of the works of New Zealand composers, and in the second half vocal and pianoforte numbers composed abroad were presented. In welcoming the visitors on behalf of the branch, Mrs P. A. Riddle, the president, presented each with a posy of spring fiowers. Mr E. Q. Collin opened the programme with "Achal by the Sea," (words by Coralie McKeiier, music by Rosada Laurance), and "Tama Hori" (words by Dorothy Jesson, music by Edith Harrhy). Then came two items by the chorai. grOup under Mrs P. A. Hiddle — "lting out Wild Bells" (words by Tennyson,' musie by C. Roy Spackman), and "Down tho Valleys Wild" . (words by Williuin Blake, music by Alfred Hill). Mr E. T. Haldane was heard in tbe songs "Waiata Maori" (Alfred Hill) and "Horses of the 'Dawn" (words by Mareeda Batten, music by Mary Brett) . Tlie remainder of the program^ie Was given by the visitors, who were warinly welcomed and had to respond to many encores, Mrs . Audrey Gibson Foster played the first movement of "Sonata in G Minor" (Douglas G. Lilburne, of Wanganui). This modern composition was fulJy appreciated by members, and ou their request the pianiste played cxcerps from the second movement and linale. Miss Elgar Christie delighted tlie audience with a bracket of songs composed by Mrs Audrey Gibson Foster: — "New Moon" (words by McCoy), "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" (words by Robert Bourdillon), "To a Fallen Rpplar" (words by Mary Webb), and "The Triple Isles," (words by F. O. Bennett). The singer- and composer were both beartily applauded. In the second half of the programme Mrs Foster played "Nocturne" in D flat for the left . hand (Scriabin), "Scherzo" from Sonata in F Minor (Brahms), "Murmuring Breezes" (Jensen) and "Study" (Scriabin). Miss Christie contributed MalJinson's."Slow, Horses, Slow," "0, That It Were So" (Frank Bridge), "Tbe Blackbird's Song" (Cyril Scott), "My Lover Comes Riding" (Vaughan De Leath) and "The Stolen Heart," an Irish i'olk song arranged by Stanford. At the end oi an exceedingly enjoyable programme, Mrs Riddle expressed the thanks and gratitude of the British Music Society members for the very pleasant evening given by the Wellington ladies. lt. was announced that the final session of the year would be devoted to the works of German composers. During November a vocal group evening will be held at the president's home. Hatuma, and the children's group will meet at the Women's Rest rooins, Waipukurau. The ladies' committee served a dainty supper, making the enjoyment of the guthering complete.
