CHRISTMAS GIFTS SHOWN AT ARTS AND CRAFTS GUILD CIRCLE MEETING
The programme enjoyed by mernbers of the arts and crafts circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild was most. appropriately arranged for this tune of tlie year wlien thouglits are already turning towards the Christmas season. Several short demonstrations on tho niaking of suitable gifts for Christmas presents were given by circle mernbers. 1 The circle leader., Mts. L. W. Goldlincli, nas present und also the secretary, Mrs. A. C. A. Hyde. Mrs. Goldfinch welcomed all new mernbers and visitors and said tliat tiiougli the circle membership had doubled itself dnring the year, there benig now 84 mernbers, tliere was always room for more. Mernbers were remiuded that nt, the November meeting there would bo a roll call, "My Best ltecipe," and also a competition for the best article for a Christmas gift to cost not more than one shilling. Also a bring-aud-biiy stal' to lieJp along the i'unds for the new room. Mrs. Goldfinch will give a cakelcing demonstration which will bn of interest to all mernbers. it was also announced tliat it had been necessary to postpone the garden circle meeting from next Monday until Moilday week. A roll call, "The household task L dislike most" broughfc forth many amusing replies and a variety of excellent suggestions were made by other members to make tliese tasks less unpleasant. Mrs. L. W. Goldfinch gavo the first demonstration on the making of a dressed doll to stand on the bcd instead of a nightgown case. Tliis was very prettily and most inexpensively mad© with three-quarters of a yard of washing sgtin, machine gathercd across tho material about 1^ inches apart, leaving six inches from the hem. This is joined into a circle, the top part being gathered onto a doll. It was theh' padded with newspaper and a thread placed through them hem to draw it togetlier underneath. Mrs. Goldfinch also showed how to make a pretifcy teapot stand by attachmg coloured wooden beads to.tho edge of a cork mat wjiicli could also be painted, Embroidered teapot holders were a third suggestion which she made. Mrs. Beaton showed tbe members how to make Very pretty crocheted coathangers, always welcome gifts at Christmas time. Mrs. C. Lass'en demonstrated the • making of very dainty organdie puff cases. A long strip of organdie cut on the cross had one edge finelv rolled between the thumb and first finger. Tliis was cut into pieces which were forined into petals and placed in circles. Handkerchief sachets and nightgown cases could be similarly made. Mrs# Smith showed the niembers how to do fagotting, some very pretty blouses and nightgowns which she had made being miich admired. Shadow work was also displayed and members interested were shown bow to do tliis. The final demonstration was givcn by Mrs^ Mackay who showed how to make a hexagonal waste paper basket with pieces of cardboard covered with material, the effect being most cliarming. During the afteruoon tea intervai several announcements were made. Mrs. Deans said that an invitation had been received from the Masterton Guild to attend tbeir birthdav party on November 9. Hhe asked any member who would be in Masterton on that date to let her know. Mrs. O. P. Hopkins reminded members of the sunshine circle annual meeting on November 29. The cake competition was won by Mrs. Rutledge and Mrs. G. H. Stqevens was the winner of the soft toy.
