Hon. D. G. fiullivan, replying to a question on the wkeat control scheme, said tke wkeat farmers were satisfied with tke arrangements ke had made for them. • He pointed out tkat fowl wheat was not controlled under tke sckeme. Tke Government " controlled milling wkeat, but not fowl wkeat. Tkey kad found, when discussing tke problem of fowl' wkeat, tkat there would be tke ptmost difficulty in controlling it, and so tke Government kad left tke mattei alone. He was sorry that fowl wkeat kad gone up, because it affected the interests of people in the poultry industry, but ke kad secured some ad^antages foi them in otker directions. Mr C. A. Wilkinson said tke grant in tke Estimates for the development oi tke wkeat industry was a straigkt-out subsidy to the growers. In spite of all tke kelp given to tke growers, they kad not been able to produce tke amount required, witk the result that importation of wkeat kad been necessary. He alsQ mentioned the importation of oats and maize, and stated he object'ed to the principle of importing when they could grow them in New Zealand. He asked the Minister if the Internal Marketing Department was of any use. It was going to be a costly department. Hon. W.Nash: There will be a surplus in tke operations of tke Internal Marketing Department. Colonel J. Hargest said that as ft result' of Mr Sullivan taking over the bread industry tkey kad a dearer loaf. Consumers were dissatisfied and bakers in tke Nortk Island complained of the quality of tke flour. Tke millers stated tkeir profits were not good, and the farmers said they could not grow wheat at the price. Mr Sullivan: Everyone is satisfied witk the sckeme. Mr J. A. Eoy suggested that some of tke huge amount spent on highways skould be allocated for backblocks roads.
