Progress League to Wait Until Next Year TIME NOT OPPORTUNE The h'e:« of staging a, carnival and queen carnival in Hastings this vear has been abandoned by the Hastings and District Progress League. There was considerable discussion at the meeting of the committee last evening regarding the proposals, when it was decided to carry the matter no further, but to revive consideration early in the new year. The president, Mr A. I. Rainbow, presided over Messrs C4. A. Maddison, W. A. Whitlock, A. 0. A. Hyde, W. E. Bate the Rev. D. J. A. .Shaw and Mrs 3 ' Jones, at the meeting last evening and the carnival proposal was one of the major items of business on the agenda paper. The proposal" called for the staging of the carnival week at the end of Kovember, but, after hearing the viejvs of various representatives of local organisations, it was decided that the project be postponed for the time being and that it , be further discussed at a later meetimr with the objective of conductmg

the carnival duriDg March of. next year. By that time, it was felt by members there would be somerfabine more definite available regarding the proposed new sports ground in Hastings. A request for a donation of £2 2/towards the payment of the legal espenses incurred in the taking over of the proposed Clifton Domain was received and it was agreed to grant this amount. At the outcome of the change m the constitution of the league it is now possible to increase the memberg^jjp of the committee and Messrs A. Kirkpatriek and H. K* Fowler,^ and Mrs Preston-Thomas were appointed committee members. In addition a sub-committee, comprising Messrs Bate, Hyde and the secretary, Mr G. E. G. RogerSj was appointed to consider the matter of appointing additional members and to report back at the next meeting. A request to arrange for a concert to take place in Hastings on behalf of the young violinist, Allan Loveday, of Palmerston Korth, was received from the Mayoxn of that town, who explained that efforts were being made to raise funds to enable the talented violinist to eomplete his education overseas. It was decided to reply that the league was prepared to help with such a concert in Hastings or alternatively assist in any Domi-nion-wide appeal, but could not hold itself responsible', financially in any way in the matter, A report was received from Wellington regarding the Kew Zealand cen*tennial celebrations, and consideration of this communication was deferred in the meantime.
