GIRL DUCKED IN SEA
Broke an Appointmeni A inarried man ducked a gitl in a rough sea at Blackpool late at night beeause she did not keep an appointment made in a ballroom. When charged, the man, William James Turner, aged 24, of Hereford street, Rochdale, said: "I was going to swim to the Islo of Man." In eourt at Blackpool he said he did not mean. to harm the girl, Emily Heeley Rogerson, of Sheffield, but "was just mad at her for not turnjng up in the afternoon." Emily Rogerson said she did not keep the appointment, but xn6t Turner in a ballroom and. after a cOuple of dances they walked on the promenade. It was then about 11 o'clock. "I did not want to go on the s&ads," she said. "But he had his arm round me and seemed to draw me on to the sands. When we got near the water 's edge he asked me why I did not meet him in the afternoon. Before I could answer he threw me down into the water. ' ' George Craven, an amusement caterer, said that he heard sereams coming from the beach, 'and saw Turner and the girl struggling in tho sea. The water was about a foot deep. The girl was face downwards in the water and ihe man was pushing her head in conliuuously. Ho was on his knees. Turner whs bound over for 12 months on conditioii that he went into a home for treatment, and was ordered to pay costs on » drunkenness chalgs.
