TAUMARUNUI, Last Night. j A Katieke County surfaceman, .Thomas Francis Hogan, aged §2, was killed this morning while working in a pumice trench nine feet six inches deop" at thb junction of Oio No, 1 and Oio No. 2 roads about 12 miles from Raurimu. Deceased and another surfaceman, Harold Cole, wero preparing a i trench to replace the wooden culvert with concrete when one side of the , trench fell in. Gole managed to jump clbar but deceascd w&s buried in pum- . ice to a depth of sevetal feet. j Cole immeidately gave the alarm to I a settler and telephone mefisages 'brought - help from all directions. Ccle Imeanwhile commenced rescue work but 25 minutes passed before deceased 's body was recovered. A medical officer was summoned from Taumarunui but deceased wm dead when removed from J the trench. ' | The inquest opened this afternoon at ; Taumarunui before Mr. W. Thomas, coroner, when Mr. W. W. Stanton, Kai.tieke County engineer, identified the ,body and the inquest- was adjourned ,sine die.
