Thousatids Arrive in France from Spain DRIFTING AT SEA

After travelling 200 miles in tke Bay of Biscay in rough seas, a journey whieh occupied three and a-half days, 220 fully-armed Asturian troops from Gijon arrived in a drifter. They were exhausted from their ordeal and presented a pitiful sight when strpggling aahore in tattered uniforms. A lorryload of riflles, machine-guns and bombs were confiscated by the police. Later the refugees left for Catalonia by train under escort. Those of them who were wounded were taken to hospital at Bayonne. Over 6000 refugees have now reached France from Gijon. More are expected. All are being transferred to Catalonia. Monv suffered great hardships, drifting for days at sea, with inadequate water and food supplies, The Salamanca Government claims that 5000 fieeing militiamen from Gijon have been picked up by insurgent warships on the high seas. Aceording to a message from La Eoclielle, a French fishing-boat arrived towing a Spani^h boat in which there were 80 militiamen and several women and children from Gijon. The boat was found drifting 80 miles from the coast,
