Charge of Attempted* Extortion of Money SUBSTANTIAL BAIL FIXED

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. "Blackmail, is it?'' queried Mr B. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's. Court to-day when Joseph Dyer appeared before hira, Dyer was charged that between November 1933 and August 6, 1937, with. iiitent to extort money,, he aecueed a man of the serious crime of indecent ■ assault on a male. Dyer was remanded to appear on -November 1. "I ask that it he made very substantial, as this is a serious crime," said Detective-Sergeant Holmes when application was made for bail. The detective-sergeant added that two other cbarges of a different nafhre would be preferred. The Magistrate fixed bail at' self
£300, with one surety of £300, a condition being that Dyer ehould report daily to the police. On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Holmes, the name of the person from whom it was alleged Dyer bad attempted to obtain money was suppressed.
