Savings Efiected by H.B, Education Board DAY LABOUR USED By compleUng five building jobs by day labour, the Hawke's Bay Education Board, as the result of high tenaer prices, has saved £415 on works which cost it £744. A report to this effect by the secretary, Mr. W. h. Dunn, wag received at the board meeting in Napier this morning. The report indicated price differences as tabulated*
A saving of £70 on. the estimates and £415 on the tenders, was effected^ The acting-chairman, Mr. J. 3. "Wauchope, remarked that it caused concern to find that such a position existed. The board liked To see that they were giv■ing- work to those whose children were in attendance at the schools. ' "Some time ago," he continued, "the board' s architect brought before us the question of the huge increase in the tenders for certain work. It was pointed out that whereas six months before, a shelter shed had been erected for £52, the lowest tender for another shed in a similar situation was £104— double the price." - . • The board had. decided to do certain work itself to coinpare the figures, and the result had heen staggering, he concluded.
