MAORI PA FOR HAWKE'S BAY
Commemorating Centenary of Dominion BISH0P BENNETT'S PLAN The possibility of tke erection of a complete replica of an old-time Maori pa on the To Mata domain or on atiother eminence in the district, as part of the celebrations of the New Zealand centenary, was mentioned by the Biskop of Ao-tea-Eoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. . Bennett, at a g'athering at the Hawke's Bay Art Gallery and Museum last evening upon the occasion of an address by Dr. Wi Repa. While. no delinite decision has yet been made upon the matter, it is likely that tho pa will be erected somewhere in Hawke's Bay. Bishop Bennett told the audienee that an inspection of the Te Mata domain was made yesterday by people interested in the project. The trustees of the domain heartily approved of the idea and had given an assurance that any part of the domain would be available for the building of tho pa. It was proposed that two pas should be constructed, one depicting a pa of the type common before the arrival of the pakeha, and the other illustrating the modernisation which had taken place following the efforts of the Maori to defend himself against the rifles of Ihe white people. "The expense will be a big tking," said Bishop Bennett, "but whether the Government will help us in this or not, I do not khow. It has not even been arranged that we shall build a pa yet."
