Rare Caterpillar5 A large moth, a species of porina, has been. sent to the Hawke's Bay Museum by Mr. A. R. Wilkie, of Tutira. The caterpillar of this moth is frequently attacked by the cordyceps fungus, and is so ckanged into what is commonly known as the "vegetable caterpillar." This moth has a large kairy body and light coloured wings witk brown markings. Owing to the large number of caterpillars which are destroyed by the fungus, the moth is comparatively scarce. The caterpillars are subterranean, living on the rcots of grasses and other plants. When attacked by the fungus practicai ly every tissue of the insect is replaced by the myceUum and from oue eud, usually the head, the spore-beariug stalk pushes its way above ground in order to disseminate the spores of the fungus. Travel by Road and Air. The speediness of travel by meane of established services in New Zealand was brought home to Mrs, F. A. Marriott, 0^' Westport, who arrived at Hsatings last night to see ker father, Mr. H. Boshier, who is seriously ill in the Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Marriott left her home at 6 o'clock yesterday morning, travelling for four hours by car to Greymouth, wkere she connected with the aeroplane service which brought her to Nelson. From there she again left by 'plaue for Wellington, and while over Cook Strait received advjce by radio that her reque^t to have the Wellington-Napier service car delayed slightly had- been granted. On her arrival at Wellington she hastened to the service car, which had been kept waitiug only a few minutes, and arrived at Hastings at 10 o'clock Jast night.
