Shoe Manufacturers In Christchurch MANY DISMISSALS

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A categ9rical denial of contentions of the Minister of Labour, the Hon. H, T. Armstrong, who declared that the shoe trade was enjoying a boom ' «ind eihploying the largest ' nrtmber of hands iu' its history, wus 'given this morning 'by Mr. T. G. Shank's, chairman of the loeal manufacturers' gfoup. Mr. Shanks said that the "position in Christchurch at* the present moment was that the ' shoo industry vras not at' the peak of production. Factories were working short tinie. There were 83 clismissals in Christchurch alone ' during the past three months and fiirther disniissals -were inevltable in $bo near future. "On October 1," said Mr. Shanks, ' ' the Prime Minister made a ' statd- , rnent that the Government was alive to the dahgers confronting secondary industries through excessive' importa,tions. The shoe manufacturing industiy is one of thOse most' seriously a& fected, and is ■ anxiou'sly awaiting the further statement ' promised by the Prime Minister as to the Government 's intentions. ' '
