Japanese Offensive Fails At .Shanghai CONSUL'S ADVICES

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese consul has received the foliowing cablegram from Nanking : — "The Chinese repulsed a Japanese attack south-west of Lotien. A vigorous Chinese eounter-attack south of Wentsaopang drove back the Japanese beyond their starting-point. "Ixj the Kiangwan seetor heavy punishment was nieted ont to the Japanese attackers, "In severe hghting at Chapei the Chinese troops beat off the enemy at every point despite Japanese bombing and use of mechanised units.
