TUKITUKI STOP-BANK
37 Men. Now Working on a Co-operative Contract Rapid progress is being made with ihe building of the stop-baiik on the right side of the Tukituki river at Waipukurau. Work on ihe portion between the raiway bridge and the- main highway bridge was begun early last week by 14 men formerly -employed at the Waipukurau District High School. This tiumber has been reduced to 13 now that Oite is in hospital. Until yesterday these men Were employed by thg day, but now they are working on a co-operative contract.. Twenty-four men formerly engaged on work at the aerodrome make the total Working On tle Stop-bank 37. These 24 started on tho jr.b on October 6 and have becfc workihg dh cohtfact basis the whole time. The * contracts consifet of two-ehain stnpa. At the base the bank is 14fect wide, nurrqwing to four 'feet 'at the apOx. At a rough* estimate the etop-bank between the two bridges will contain 3,000 cubie feet of spoil. The bank is to be finlshed with black s"il, wt.cli will be sown with grass seed, The spoil ia being exeavated from grountl at least h6lf a chain away from the Stop-bank towards the river. 'j'lansfercnce of matried men from the aerodrome to the stop-bank work left only about nine single workers' at the fierodrome, but before long the 24 men wi1! return to thfe aerodrome, leaving the former high-school workers to completo the job. The cOst of the wotk-^which is controlled by the Public Works Department^— is estimated at £2620, €500 of which is being found by the Waipukurau Borough Council.
