Items from the Order Paper hastings council The monthly meeting of tho Hastings Borough Council was held. last evening, the Mayor, Mr G. A. Maddison, presiding over Crs. P. M. Cahr, P. Loach, C. H. Slater, "A. I. Rainbow, S. J. MeKee, T. Falconcr. G. W. B. McCorunch, and T. Dobson. *Leave of absence was granted Cr. S. Ashcroft. » o * "Every monthly returns show that the number of subscribers are increasing and for a town of our population the number of subscribers to the library is the biggest in. New Zealand," coinmented the May%r, Mr G. A. Maddison. "It indicates that the service th9 library is giving is fully appreciated by the people of this community." * # • Ten new birdB have been acquired during the month for inclusion at the aviary at Cornwall Park, the'y including cockatiels, American mourning dovos, lace-neck doves, Chinese mandarin ducks and Chinese king quail. • « « Eesidents of Wall road wrote stating that the water supply during the summer montlis was not adoqi^ate for their needs and asked i'or a full supply to be given. As tho cost of converting the ineh pipes to'four-inch pipe? would be about £350., the council decided that it could not acceded to the request. # # •- Last month 25 head of wandering stock and 12 stray dogs were impounded. • • • Twenty dogs were registered last month, making the total for the year 973% the f'ees aggregating £379 6/6. • » • The Nuisance Inspector, Mr H. A. Green, visited 160 residences last month for leaky taps, noxious weeds and unregistered dogs and as a result. sent out 53 notices, mainly concerning leaky taps, rubbish on roadsides, overhanging trees and dog notices. * * # There are now 1647 adult and 545 children subscribers to the public library. Last month 170 new books were purchased and £56 19/9 was banked. • • • ' Two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were rejported in the borough last month. • • • The Health Inspector, Mr C. Carrell, reported that 16 food premises were inspected and eight visits to saleyards were made during the month, all bemg kept in good condition. • » • The work of metalling the roads to be surfaced during the coming seasou is proceeding satisfactorily and 2.4 miles have been metalled out of a total of 4.3 miles. The worfc of spray ing will be commenced as soon as the new metal is consolidated. » # •
Sixty-nine enamel street name-plates have been ordered. It was found necessary to procure these plates from Adelaide on account of the lower price. • • • A scheme for the more up-to-date heating of the Municipal Theatre has been submitted to several firms for quotations and as soon as they come to hand a report will be prepared. • « • As the road is used a great deal by people going to Windsor Park and the dust nuisance is very bad, Mr J. Dickson wrote asking the council to con-x sider the question of tar-sealing Park road nqrth. He also pointed out that bicycles are being ridden on the footpath because of the state of the road. * # • "In view of the excellent work carried out by the club, I move that this request be granted," said the Mayor when the West End Tennis Club wrote asking for certain guttering work, estimated to cost about £5, be done in order to drain off the water efficiently from the tennis courts at Ebbett Park. The motion was carried. « * • An application for permission to operate a sound car on the streets between 7 p.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Saturday nights for tho purpose of enabling the public to hear "Bible lectures vital to their welfare,'* was not granted. • # # The use of Nelson Park for the massed bands ' concert next Sunday was granted the Hastings Citizens' Band. • • • Permission to erect a volley board at Cornwall Park was granted the Park Tennis Club.
