DOUBLE ROADWAY

Automobile Association Gives Support SAFETY TO M0T0RISTS Endorsement4 from the aspect of safety to motorists, of the proposal to construct a doublo roadway on the Marino Parade, Napier, was given by the monthly meeting of the Automobile Association (Hawke's Bay) yesterdav. Emphasising that as an association members were interested solely in tho question of safety to motorists, the president, Mr J. H. Edmundson, gave unqualified approval of the suggestion, and a motion to this effeet was carried. "As an association, we should disclaim any responsibility, or any leaning oue way or the other, ' ' said. Mr Edmundson. "The only thing that concerns us is the question of the safety of motorists." Notwithstanding all tho publicity given in the matter of glaring headlights, he continued, the question was still a very pressing one, and many towns were now adopting the system or having a double roadway, separated by trees, with one-way traffic. The trunks of the trees acted on the same principle as a Venetian blind, shading the eyes of the motorist from the glare of headlights on cars approaching him. "Such a row of trees existing dowa the middle of the road must result.in more safety," said Mr Edmundson. "The glare is effc-ctually preveuted from reaching the motorist 's eyes, and that is the crux of the position. Other than that it does not concern us as a motor association." On the motion of Mr J. E. Peach, seconded by Mr E. Dysart, the meeting passed a xesolution to the effect that the association supported the propasal to construct the double road, in the interests of the safety of users of tho Toad.
