A.A. Cattle Sales

STORTFORD FIXTURE Breeders Biscuss Question of Support REFERRED TO COUNCIL The question of whether support should be given to the holding of saies of unregistered cattle by stock auctioneers at Stortford Lodge was placed before the annual meeting of the Now Zealand Aberdeen Angus Cattle Breeders » Association held at Dannevirke l&st night. It was pointed out that, irrespective of what attitude the association took, ihe saies would continue M Stortford Lodge, and there was no dqubfc that plenty of cattle would be forthcoming. The matter was finally rsferred to the council, with a recommendation that it take any action considered advisable in the interest of the breeders as a whole. Mr H. N, Stewart, who represented the stock auctioneers of Hastings, expiained that- the fixture at Stortford Lodge in June last did not in any way elash. with the association 's annual saie at Dannevirke. There was a desire on the part of those interested that it should be held. Breeders at present had no opportqnity of disposing of their surplus female cattle, and the month of June was a suitable time. No cattle were offered at that sale which were not registered, and they had to be the property of the breeder. The sale in evefy way was most successfol, and attracted entries from Gisborne, Manawatu and Dannevirke. A suggestion had been pnt forward that the sale in future should be helll under the auspices of the Breeders' Association, which would be advantageous to all concerned. The sale at Stortford Lodge would not affect that at Dannevirke, which was an old established hxfcure. "The stronghold of the breed.in the past has 'been in Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay, but conditions have altered to-day," said Mr J. E. Hewitt (Mangamaire). "I feel that if any such sale is held it should take place. at some more central place than Hastings, which is not central to the Wairarapa, the Manawatu and the Main Trunk." 1 ' The sale at Hastings has now been organised, and will be held whether this association agrees to it or not," said Mr N. B. Gibb'ons. "If we fail to joia in the auctioneers might alter their conditions to aucept unregistered stock. By supporting this proposal we would be domg something xof advantage tc the breed, and if we are able to keep unregistered cattle from being offered wa will achieve some good. We would be wise to support this proposal, as if we did not we might be faced with something else later." *"Jj i order to hold the sale the auctioneers have first to get the support of the breeders, and I think that a sale at Hastings is not in the best interests of the breeders in the North lsland," said Mr J. Webb (Taihape). "If this association wants to assist the breeders the sale should be held at Dannevirke in. order to serve the West Coast." "A sale could be held there, too," said a member. Mr Webb: 1 would like to ask Mr Stewart if he thinks that it is in the interest of the breeders to hold a sale at Stortford Lodge. Mr Hewitt: I would also like to as* Mr Stewart if he thinks it best to hold oue big sale, or several smail ones. Hastings' Central Position "The suggestion to hold the sale at Stortford Lodge was lirst mentioned by tireeders in Hawke's Bay,". explained Mr Stewart. "Five breeders met me and guaxanteed to yard 180 cattle, and j 240 were offered. It«Was on account uf your members that the sale was held at Stortford Lodge, and it was a great success. There arq many breeders in i'overty Bay and Hawke 'a Bay, and Hastings is in a central position fo* sueh a sale. Poverty Bay is the breed- j ing ground of New Zealand, and there are' as many bulls absorbed there as auywkere." Mr Webb; You cannot hold the sale -.vithout cattle. » Mr Stewart: We will get them all iigbt. "There is no doubt that the sale will be held> and that the cattle will be got," said Mr Gibbons. "If we'are not "prepared to give our supjjort the | auctioneers inight widen their pr-ovi-Mon in a manner that would prejudiee this "association." Mr Hewitt: Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay might have the majority of ureeders jwst now, but they are not going to have it in the future. New . Ureeuers are spriiigmg up m other ; parts, and the position Will soon be i quite different. Wfe should have onp big central sale for female cattle, where it would be recognised that breeders were offering their best. I admit that the attempt we made to hold a sale was a> failure, due to laek of support by the breeders. A member: Who organised iti Mr Hewitt: The association. The same member: You had a sliot md missed. Mr. Hewitt: Yes. There was no guarantee that the sale would be held. Mr. J. W. Ellingbam (Ormondville) said that the holding of a salp was just as much a benefit to the man wh Wanted to buy as to the breeder wln wanted {o sell. As the breed increasf t' more saies would have to be held, ani he was satisfied that the assoeiatior had a dutv in all saies in giving assis tance to see that everything was first tn order. Mr. Stewart explained that all expenses of the sale" at Stortford Lodge tvere borne proportionately by tho breeders concerned. Tbe association'--eeretary, Mr. O-orbin. was present to s®e that tlie pcdigreps, wero in order. Mr. L. A. P. SheiTiff, who presided. said that the question of venue was nofc the iuiportant point, but whether the ; association was prepared to support such a sale anywhere. ' Hrt M. Greenwood said that no endmmi

eers to malie Hastings the only place lor such a sale. Mr. Hewitt: Sucli -saies would diffuse tlie buyinir power, which is something j that must not be lost night of. A member: The Hastings sale is evidently going fco be held. and J think that it is in the interests of this association to give it our support. After further diucussion tlie question was referred to the council to take Fhl£ §£&og Ka§ cpnBiderecl pgceBsary.
