LAST EFFORT

(British Official WircleSs.)

Agreement on Spain COMMITTEE TO MEET Present State of Affairs Must End TIME LIMIT PROBABLE

(Beceived 14, 12.SQ p.m.) BUGBY, Oct. 13. The views expressed yesterday by M. •Corbin, the French Amfcassador, to Mr Anthony Eden regarding the position which has arisen from the ltalian Note were, it is icferred, among the matters discussed at a Cabinet meeting to-day. As a result of the study whieh both Britain and France have given to the ltalian Note, and of the exchange of views between them, it can be stated that a broad agreement exists between the two Governments that another serions attempt should be made to bring

the other Powers concerned into an agreement on Spain, although it is regarded as necessary that some definite limit on time should be set to such an attempt. With this object, the two Governments favour the calling together of the Non-Intervention Committee, and it is hoped that a meeting may bc held towards the end oi the week. The broad agreement between London and. Paris embraces likewise the view that if the renewed effort to obtain agreement in the Non-Interyention Committee should fail, the present state of affairs could, not be expectcd to continue. The effort gives irtefutable proof of the patifint perseverance of the two Governments in conciliation. The proposal corresponds with the procedure envisaged in the ltalian Note, and it is hoped that the committee 'a proceedings will be free from obstructive delays. At the meeting both tbe British and French representatives will state their position fully and clearly, and these statements are likely to demonstrate the complete solid'arity of the British Government with the French in this latest endeavour to cope with the dangers of the Spanish sitnation.
