Massed Band Concert
H. T.
LANCASTER,
Sir, — Regarding the massed band coneert on Sunday, October 17, kindly grant me the space to compliment these bands upon their co-operating to give the public this great treat. This compliment also applies to the liorough Council, for makiag Nelson Park available; it is so oentrally eituated. Now, I would like to' say that the general public. should also co-operate in giving these bands their attendance. Let us make it a Band Sunday. Let us first of all make sure we -see the parade, for this will be a sight >vorth seeing — about 130 bandsmi\ in the.ir dilferent uniforms. Seeing tnis parade will persuade us also to go along and hear the concert. The object of this Massed Bands Sunday is to raise money. N.ow, sir, what unit of our civic life is more entitled to our financial help than the band? Let me suggest that we dip a bit deeper than usual — in any case, not less than sixpence each. £ To those" who camiot attend the concert, I say: "Don't forget a donation." I am making this appeal for financ-. ial help owing to the very large cost of upkeep of these bands. The cost oi' these bands' uniforms and instrunients alone would run up to £2,500. And the bandsmen's services are fciven lree, year in and year out. I undcrstand that this concert is to be repeated in Napier. In conclusion, I would suggest that, with an attendance of, sqy, 2000, ii would be nico to see 100 lialf-crowns, 100 two-shilling pieces, 250 shillings, 1350 sixpences, and say, 200 smaller amounts. Thanking you, Yours, etc.,
Chairman, Hastings Citizens' Band Committee. Hastings, October 12, 1937.
