"Should Not Go"
DR. WILSON'S DUAL POSITION County Council's Tributes To His Services COMPLETE CONFIDENCE That Dr. H. M. Wilson should remain u a county representative on the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board until special legislation is passed compelling him to relinquish his position, was the resolution passed at to-day's meeting of the Hawke's Bay Oounty Council, the members of whicb paid tributes to hls outstanding services as a medical in hospital work during the last 30 years. The chairman, Mr F« B. Logan, said ttiat as a Teeult of the Commission 's inquest into hospital affairs the question of a, member of the honoxary staff being also a member of the board, had been raised. This was the position yrMch. concerned Dr. Wilson. "Dr. Wilson has been aetively con* necfced with hospital work for the last 30 yeara, ' ' said Mr Logan. "He has been medical superintendent and honorary eurgeon, and has represented ihe county ratepayers for the last six years, In all capacities . he has been a credit not only to himself but also to the Hospital Board and to the district in general. I notice that the recent Commission, in its finding, suggests that no one ehould be a member of the board and a member of the honoraTy ataff at the same time. Without fear of contradiction I will say that Dr. Wilson, in Ms dual capaeity, has been a decided acquisition. "I feel that Dr. Wilson should not relinquish his position as* a member of the Hospital Board until legislation is bronght .down preventing a medical ■pia™ from. holSing both positions. I move that the council write to Dr. Wilson, assuring him of complete confidence, not only of ourselves but also of the ratepayers, and request him that on no account to relinquish his present position until legislation is brought forward compelling him to do so. "I know Dr. Wilson is very worried over what action he should take in the matter," continned Mr Logan. "I feel that if he retires his action might bo misunderatood in other parts of New Zealand whare he is not known as we know him. I hope Dr. Wilson will be gnided by ns and will remain where he is until legislation compels him to relinquish his position along with other doctors in the same position." "If Dr. Wilson resigns he will be » distinct loss to the board,'' Mr Mr Jf. P. Eriksen, . in seconding the chairman 'a motioxu*"Dr. Wilson is the fairest man that we conld have^ and I would be aorry to see him leave the board." ."Should Not Go." -ASt member of the' council, I am of the opinion that Dr. Wilson should not go until legislation compels him," said Mr 0. Lassen in supporting the previous speaker. "I feel that the Hawke's Bay Hospital Board should not be specially eorted out in this way. Dr. Wilson is an invaluable member of the board and should not be expected to resign. "I have noticed a suggestion made. that in many big hospitals in the world a medical man on the administrative side has giveu every satisf action," said Mr Eriksen, "In other parts satisfaction has not always been given by one man acting in a dual eapacity, but it is not always possible to secure a man of the calibre of Dr. Wilson, who has given splendid servicc," said Mr W. Tucker. "Dr, Wilson should remain where he is till legislation is passed applicable to the whole of New Zealand." "It is essential that Dr. Wilson should continue as a member of the board," said Mr B. Harding, who endorsed the previous speakers' remarks. "Dr. Wilson 's assistance and advice have been most helpful. In many countries of the vforld the honorary doctors have a representatiVe' on tho administrative boards." "Dr. Wilson has acquitted himself with great credit to the whole district, and I don't think that he should relinquish his membership of the board," said Mr C. C. Smith. Mr S. Bennett, in an appreeiating reference to the services given by Dr. Wilson, with whom he tvent to school, said that aa the board had asked for the commission it should stand by its findings.
