NEW HOUSES
Interest in Government 1 Residences AKINA STREET BLOCK Keen interest was shown by a large number of people yesterday rn the erection of the first batch of houses iu under the Government 's hous- j ing scheme. Though the foundations ] of less than half a dozen residences j have been iaid, the various parties ] that visited Akina street tappeared to j sometbing of .interest, for it was i noted that they spent some considerablo ( time inspecting the various properties. i There was some conjecture as to tho size of the sections, the opinion being 1 expressed by several' people that they "appeared rather small. " From the i lay-out of tho foundations .already land, however, it is clear that a variety j of designs is being followed, and that i there will be no suggeStion 0f similar-. Also, the frontages of the houses ' themselves are not on the same align- i mfent. * Work has commenced on both sides of . the roadway, and authority has been given for the erection of 22 separate residences, and two twm-compartment residences. It is antieipated that the first of the houses will be available for occupation early in the new year. In the same locality it ia proposed to erect further houses a little south ot Akina street on property which has yet to be opened up, It is proposed to extend Hastings street further towards the High School, giving additional aecess to that institution as well as to the proposed Intermediate School. With the completion of the work on the various blocks of land taken over the Department, the development of the south ward of the borough will be more in keeping with that of the other wards, for it is antieipated that somethiug Hke 75 to 80 new residences will be creeted in that area as well as three new roads being formed. In additionthere will be the new Centrai School and, it is antieipated, the Intermediate School, in the same ward, Within a very short distanee of the new residential Tenders are to be called immediately the construction of a number of tho in the Hanrahan block, according to advice received by Mr E. L. M.P., this morning from the department. It is intended to ereet a twin-unit building on each of the two of the proposed Massey street extension and Willowpark road, each building to be placed on an angle on the section. Seven additional houses are be erected along both sides of the street extension, these being divided into two contracts.
