EDUCATION AND THE GOLD STANDARD.
"What.is the use of my doing this What is the use of grammar, mathematics, chemistry, or whatever the particular pet aversion may be?" said Mr. A, G-. Pite, Headmastet of Cheltenham School, in a recent speech. " At a meeting at which I was presetit £he other day, the chairtnhn said : ' What is the use of all this time you spend in school? Is it any good?' Well, if education is thought of simply as sometbing we can convert as rapidly as possible into the maximum of eaSh, then I hope it is extremely useless. Where you have to measure justice, mercy, beauty or love, you find there is no system of measurement yet devised which can work it out in £ s d or any other material form and give vou the correct answer. What the world needs to-day is not a larger capacity than one's neighbour to amass weaith, but a greater capacity to increase liappiness; and education cannot be measured by any gold standard."
