Centre Ceremony at Havelock Greens
SATURDAY'S PLAY The bowling season in Hawke's Bay was officially opened on Saturday on the Havelock North green, there being present a large crowd representative oi nearly all the clubs in the centre. The weather was not of the best, a cold wind making conditions a little unpleasant, but nevertheless an enjoyabJe afternoon was spent. Mr W. Ross, president of the centre, extended a welcome to everybody and trusted they would all have a prosperous season. He apologised for the absence of the Pori club representatives, who were that day opening their new green and pavilion. He also read a letter and telegrams of congratulations from other centres. In briefly outlining the centre' s proposals for the season, Mr Ross stated that the levy would be the same as formerly. The District. Shield competition would be on the same lines as last year, as also would the New Year tournament, to be played on the greens in Hastings, but a change had been made for the Easter tourney. This latter tourney would be played on the greens in Napier, but there would be only two sections, with the usual tbree days' section play. It was hoped thereby to. complete the tourney on the fourth day. The centre cliampionships would all be on the two-life systom this season. Mr Ross mentioned that an unofficial team of British bowlers would be paying a visit to this centre during Christmas week, and would play a full day in Napier. It was hoped to be able to make the return visit to South Auckland this season in collaboration with the Gisborne centre. In conclusion, Mr Ross wished one and all a very prosperous season. Mr ,J. P. Boyle president of the Havelock North Club, also extended a welcome to all the visitors, including the croquet ladies, of whom there were a large number present. After referring to the good work done in the preparation of the green, Mr Boyle mentioned that this year the club would attain its majority. How it would be celebrated would be later considered by the committee. He wished all an enjoyable afternoon' s play. Mr Boyle then called upon Mrs Boyle to thr'ow up the first jack and bowl, and the green was declared open for play. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the president's wife, Mrs Boyle, in the pavilion, the long tables being prettily decorated with bowls of lilies, j sweet.peas and iceland poppies.
