HEROISM IN MINE
Doctor's Perilous Task REC0GN1TI0N BY THE KING (Received 9, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 8. For 21 hours Dr. Robert Benjamin Saunders laboured underground in a Southern Rhodesian mine, his back against a dangerously shaky roof, to release a miner trapped by a fall of rock. Tho dramatic story of his heroism !e told in tho London Gazette, which announces that the King has awarded the "Edward Medal to Dr. Saunders. * He found the miner 's handa wedged against timbers, and had to lie on top of. the victim, where a slight movement might bring down tons of rock, burying both. After 16 unavailing hoins, the doctor decided to amputate the ara as the only means of extricating the miner. Conditions permitted only lef t-hand. work. The operation was successful, and the miner was brought to the surface and recovered.
