CHANGE IN WEATHER
Strong Southerly Gale and' Rain ; B0ISTER0US CONDITIONS The. rather Iong spell of fine weather experienced in Hastings and the surrounding countryside was broken this ■ morning^ when the district was swept by the first of the eeasonal equinoxial gales. Although the day bToke fine with avery indication of another real summer'® day being enjoyed, about 10 o'cloek in the morning a strong southerly. gale sprang tip, which was followed by a, sharp shower of heavy . rain. In the ■ outlying districts of the borough there was very heavy rain, the town itself apparently just missing the downpour as it was swept along tlie coastal areas. The eky was darkened and there were ominous signs of the whole district xeeeiving a drenching, but towards midday the weather and sky cleared somewhat, though conditions outdoors continued to be rather boisterous and there were intermittent showers. The change in the weather came at rather an unfort, unate time for there
waa an exceptionally huge crowd of people ia Hastings thie morning, the attraction being the annual spring meetinjr of the, Hawke's Bay Jockey Club. Then again, the official opening of the bowling season was scheduled for this afternoon at Havelock North, and the rain made the greens on. the heavy side.
