WILL GARBO EVER ACT "HAMLET?"
A tall, dark young man in spectacles, with a thick silver chain jangling on his left wrist, watched the Thames flow by his suite in the Savoy Hotei as he spoke of his dream to make Greta Garbo the greatest Hamlet, says a London writer. He was Keuben Mamouiian, 38-year-old Armenian, Russian-born film direetor to whom Hollywood listens with.respect, and whose productions havo uttraeted film-goers all over the world "or half a clozen years. , Director of Greta Garbo in ' 1 Queen Ohrxstina," and reported to be her seeret husband when, in 1934, they made a mysterious motor-car trip together through the United fcJtates, he knows more about the eJusive star than anyone else. But he will not tell. "I am in England for my iirst visit in too long a time," he said, puifing a thick cigar and dangling his chain, hung with a tiny silver whistle of the sort that directors use to call "attention" on the set.' - Mr Mamouiian 's eyebrows crawi wearily up his broad brow at any ques'tion about his friendship With Garbo^ " Please^ .these are private, personal things. ' 1 *do. not care to speak of them," he sighs. •• But when asked what was the greatest among his directorial ambitions, his brown eyes sparkled. "I am deeply lnterested in the idea of making that Hamlet into a iilm. . And' with Garbo. * 'Bhe would be wonderful in the role. Much of the psyehological problems of fhe chaTacter are those winch GarlKi herself presents. Normally, 1 am not too keen on actresses playing 1 men ;s parts • i., ... but- with Garbo it is difl'erent altogether. "1 make' two films a year now and work as a free-lance, which I prefer, as it gxves me £ reedem to choose: the sort of story 1 really want to make. immediately on .my return to Hollywood in October I shall begm work on a. film with Ginger Bogers. " and Uharles Boyer, 'neither of whom I have before directed."
Michael Brooko (l^arl of Warwick) made his iirst appearance last month. as a film actor playing in a scene where officers of the British fleet visit Jean Lalitte, whose aid they wish. to enlist tor a proposed attack on New Orleans. Lord Warwick joined a number of stars at a luncheon in* celebration of the birthday of Cecil de Mille, who is di-x-ecting the picture, "The Buccaneers." * * # "Many actresses go to Hollywood.* and iind themselves rich women," mentions a writer. OtherS, . of course, go there and iind themselves rich husbands.
